Year 2009 Quick Review

As members of SDA Batch ’78 (automatic or honorary), we have a lot to be proud of and be thankful for. Dami nating accomplishments as a group for this year 2009.

First, we are now considered a legal entity with the successful SEC registration of our batch name. Cheers to St. Dominic Academy Batch 78 Alumni Association, Inc. (aka SDA Batch '78)

Meron na rin tayong bank account sa BDO under the same legal entity name we established thru SEC.

We also have a good accounting system for our batch funds. Every cent is accounted for and reported to all on a monthly basis.

We have full transparency in everything that we do, available for perusal on our website and thru sometimes annoying emails I sent y’all. :-) We’re open 24/7 for scrutiny, if one wishes to probe of our operations.

Another big thing is the scholarship project I proposed earlier. It is moving forward, thanks to you!

Understandably, not everyone agreed to the proposal...or some just don’t see it as a priority for them...or perhaps some, even if they really want to, just don’t have the capacity to offer financial support at this time.

No problemo amigas, amigo!

Good thing is we have some loving peeps supporting the scholarship project, really putting their money where their mouth is, without hesitation. Some cutely doing it anonymously, mysteriously.;-)

And mind you, a few are even outside of our core group...special thanks to them...

...with a kiss! hehehe

Pero di pa huli ang lahat for those who wishes to be part and help make a dream come true for deserving night high school kids. We still badly need your support, financial or otherwise. Whatever help or support you can offer us...a cent, a prayer or something else, all very much appreciated!

I am confident the scholarship project will be a successful one...many thanks to all those who have already shown their supports and made their pledges! The project is moving the right direction folks...”oh thank you very much”, sabi nga ni Elvis. :-)

My only wish is for this coming year 2010 is that sana marami pang mag-participate para ma-expand natin ang scope ng scholarship project natin… or makagawa pa tayo ng iba pang projects...like my dream library. hehehe

More importantly, we have an open-door policy so anyone can ask questions and raise any concerns, if there’s any, about how we operate as a group. Always feel free to ask when you have questions or doubts. Nothing is personal here so don't hate my guts for being so uber-aggressive and pro-active; we all have the same goal. ;-)

So all of you give yourself a pat on the back, congratulate yourself for a job well done in 2009. You really just didn’t talk the talk, you actually walked the walk. Maraming Salamat Po!

Oh yeah, Happy 2010 nga pala! hehehe...Cheers to the new year!

UPDATED: White Elephant Christmas Party

Update: Christmas Party is on December 27th, around lunch time @ Wena's place. Bring your white elephant Christmas gift, if participating in gift exchange, or just bring your charm, your smile, and your appetite. Holiday cheers to all!

=========================================================

Unfortunately, the scheduled November fun gathering didn’t happen due to unforeseen circumstances. However, in the spirit of the holiday season, how about a Christmas party for the group?

My suggestion (ehem...alam nyo naman ako, mahilig mag-suggest) is a lunch gathering, same day as the annual SDA Alumni Homecoming, Dec. 30th. This allows classmates from out of town to hit two birds with one stone ika nga; being able to attend my suggested lunch gathering, and the SDA Alumni homecoming, thereafter.

Malay nyo, baka umattend ako? hehehe

To make it more fun, may I also suggest a white elephant gift exchange? I always participate in this gift exchange here in the US, and it’s surely make the Christmas party interesting and fun.

I once ended up with a toilet seat! The good thing was, it’s not used yet...at least bago pa naman! hehehe.

Anyone interested in participating should bring a gift, typically inexpensive, mumurahin lang (say amount under Php50 or 100), nothing fancy but actually humorous item, or even used item from home/office, wrapped but not labeled or named.

Katuwaan lang naman!

To understand the mechanics and concept of white elephant gift exhange, please click the image below for full view. Simple lang naman ang instructions.

What do you think? Let’s have a party? Suggestion lang po ulit!

December na, Pasko na!

Parang ang bilis ng panahon. Kailan lang, we were all looking forward sa 2007 Grand Reunion. Ang dami na palang nangyari after that momentous night ng pagtipon-tipon. Some are bad or worst like that recent Ampatuan massacre and of course, the deadly Ondoy. But all in all, most of them are good. Kasi, karamihan sa atin are still in great health, not-so-bad life, and good sense of humor...kahit papaano...heheheh.

Di ko na lang kaya ipa-alala sa inyo na in a couple of years, ang Batch 78 ay mag-tasingkwen na, age-wise! Golden years na!

Ooopppss! sorry ladies, I know how sensitive most of you are about your every younger age, and your shapely body. ;-)

The fact is, karamihan sa atin ay nandito pa rin hinihintay ang tamang panahon para gunitain ulit ang mga alaala ng ating mga nakaraan. Although there’s a few of us already had theirs, parang ang sarap i-celebrate that golden years of ours...50’s night!

Anyway, Christmassy na! Over the weekend, daughter and I had to do our traditional chore during Thanksgiving holiday here in the US. I chopped down errr...pulled-down pala, our dusty Christmas tree from the garage ceiling. The last 5 or so years I’ve been using this alternative option. I got tired of buying and putting up a fresh one. My share of saving the environment, one tree every Christmas time. 

There you have it! Nakatayo na pero wala pang balot na regalo underneath. Hinihintay ko ang padala nyo! Yung payment sa mga pledges nyo para sa ating scholarship project...and your annual membership fees.

That’s all I want for Christmas Dear!

CNN Hero of the Year 2009

I couldn't be more proud of our CNN Hero of the Year. I've heard about him awhile back and followed his passion and effort to bring education to poor kids using his "pushcart classroom" as an alternative to joining street gangs.

I am really happy for him to have won this prestigious award.

"...the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed. Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve...

...you are the change that you dream as I am the change that I dream and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be."

Lawyer of Doctors/Doctor of Lawyers

Daughter and I love to watch TV, our bonding moment together, when home and got nothing else to do. Shows like “Bones”, “CSI Miami or Las Vegas” almost always makes us glued to the screen. Our fave though however is watching courtroom drama like “Law & Order” or “Raising the Bar”. So, it’s no surprise daughter loves to debate - to my expense, and argue for that matter, like a typical lawyer in court.

Recently, daughter was tapped to be the team captain of their school’s Defense team to participate in the California state-wide Mock Trial competition held in real court with real judges and lawyers’ doing the scoring of each team member’s and overall team performance.

It was so nerve-racking, for me actually, as I watched daughter did her opening statement, argued and raised objections during the course of the trial, in front of a real judge, and lawyers playing the role of jurors.

Their Defense team did an excellent job of proving their client’s innocence of murder in the first degree that it’s no surprise the judge rendered a “not guilty” verdict, easily defeating their opponent from another school.

Everyone was so excited winning the case for their accused murder client.

Their school’s Prosecution team is a different story though!

The following week, it’s their school Prosecution team’s turn to take the floor. I honestly thought they did an excellent job proving the accused is guilty of murder, beyond reasonable doubt.

However, the final verdict of the judge proved otherwise and apparently they lost by a just a few points.

Everyone in the team was shocked at the result but it was more so disappointing when daughter told me the day after that her young career as a lawyer was cut short as their team did not make it to the next round of an exciting competition.

Overall, it was quite an experience for all, especially for parents like me, being in the courtroom watching lawyer-in-the-making daughter doing as well as anybody.

We all dream as parents to have our sons and daughters grow up to be doctors or lawyers...or perhaps astronauts...or GIS Analysts, whatever that is! ;-)

To this day, daughter and I are still debating if she wants to be a lawyer or a doctor, so I told her next time, I’d like to see her in a "Mock Operation" doing actual brain surgery of patient, in a real hospital, with real doctor and nurses, doing the judging and scoring...so I can have comparison which career she can do better...hehehe

Like always, she has good arguments in return and told me so that there would be no more debate...and I'll be quiet...

...she’ll be the doctor of lawyers or the lawyer of doctors,

...whichever comes first! hahaha

Annual Membership Fee

As you may recall, we made a Board Resolution (see content below) for alumni members to make an annual payment of membership fees of Php100 for members residing locally and $50 (or peso equivalent) for the rest living/working outside of the Philippines.

Collected membership fees are important for us to sustain at the very least our budgetary needs for administrative maintenance of our association’s good standing with SEC and other government entities for annual license renewals etc.. We also need these collected fees to fund regular meeting necessities, special events for our group, and contributions to the annual alumni homecoming event at SDA, and donations possibly to deceased or sick members or relatives.

Please consider making your payment of annual membership fee for year 2009 before the end of this year, if possible. Send your payments directly to Eva/Wena or to our BDO account.

If you are somewhere in the continental USA, you can write a check and send it to me via snail mail (let me know if you need my postal address) and I’ll make sure to deposit them directly to our BDO account, thus saving yourself the usual fee charged by remittance center when sending money overseas.

Also, please let me know if you did not receive the latest summary fund report I sent you all via email today. If you are interested in the detailed report, please send your request for a copy to our new email address: sdabatch78 at yahoo dot com...I will be more than happy to furnish you one.

Thank you all for your cooperation and continued support!

Ultimate Goal

The pledge season will NEVER be over until we reach our ultimate goal. I’m still calling all who have not made their pledges to please consider doing so.

Your time is now!

Just because we have already met our target, doesn’t mean pledging should stop?

What you should all realize is that the goal reached so far was just the initial one. Providing scholarship to two souls is NOT the ultimate goal at all. It is only the by-product of the effort to bring us ALL together in unity, in harmony...

...playing good music together...

...in a concert hall,

like a symphony!

Unfortunately, we’re still short on that one...evidently!

Just like I’ve been saying and preaching you all since this scholarship project begun to unfold, all of the money pledged and contributed will ONLY be used for this specific project. Let me make it clear to all that any unused money will either be returned to the contributor or put somewhere else depending on what will be agreed upon by all who put their money on it. Rest assured that your pledge and support, financial or otherwise, will not be for naught.

I said it once and I’ll say it again,
Every pledge count, every peso counts.

We would rather have A MILLION OF US donating one peso each, than have a handful giving big amounts. That means a million of us are getting involved. Not just a few.
Moving forward 5 years or so from now after our scholars get their high school diploma; I would like to see them continue to pursue their quest for knowledge at the college level under our guided wings, still financially supporting them until the day they become real professional in their field of studies and ready to face that tough world out there with full confidence and maturity, determined to make something of what WE, in all unity, opened the door for them...and offered them, unselfishly.

Now, that’s the ultimate goal!

"Undas"

Boo! Happy Halloween!

Be part of the solution

"No matter how insignificant what you do may seem, it is important that you do it."
-Gandhi
There is so much need out there and sometimes we don’t know which one they need our help more. But it is crucial that we do our part because we are all here on earth just for a short time.

Be part of the solution. Take a few minutes of your time and think of how you can help. How you can make a difference in the lives of other people. Make a donation. Share whatever you can.

Every peso counts.

We would rather have a million of us donating one peso each, than have a handful giving big amounts. That means a million of us are getting involved. Not just a few.

Don’t you want to be part of the solution?

“On-Target”

Dear Classmates & Friends,

I am very pleased to tell you that in spite of an astonishing but somewhat disappointing low percentage (just under 20%) participation from alumni members, still, we were able to meet our targeted goal for the proposed Night High School Scholarship Project. Suffice it to say, that if only majority of us participated, there’s no doubt in my mind we can do a lot more.

Thanks in part to all those alumni (automatic & honorary) members who submitted their pledge forms, and in particular, to an anonymous donor, albeit not truly a member, but wholeheartedly offered support without qualms or hesitations.

In other words, the efforts we have exerted so far to try to make a difference in the lives of two underprivileged kids are not lost at all!

In the next few days, all those who made their pledges will be receiving an email detailing the full mechanics this scholarship project entails. Instructions and payment procedures will also be included in the email so that you may all start fulfilling your pledges as soon as possible.

Thank you to all for understanding that your total commitment to this project is very much valued, needed, and expected in order for us to succeed in the actual implementation.

I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge those who were not able to offer their financial support at this time for one reason or another. I am confident and hopeful that next time, you will all be in a better position, ready, able, interested, and/or willing to make a commitment to similar projects or undertakings. Needless to say, that at any time, your support, financial or otherwise, is always welcome.

Lastly, let’s be proud of our batch, because we did not let ourselves down. It was not an easy ride but we were able to meet our first challenge.

Now, I can’t wait to shake hands with our future scholars. Don’t you feel the same?

Maraming Salamat Po!

Sincerely,

Edgardo David

Kill Bill...Not!

I have been following this hotly-contested and controversial house bill for quite sometime now and carefully examining the pros and cons of having such enacted legislation in the Philippines, if eventually pass in Congress.

And yes, I support RH Bill 5043, the Reproductive Health and Population Development Act of 2008.

I have read the full context of the bill here and I don’t see anything objectionable about it as it simply aims to give freedom and informed choice to everyone, especially women, poor families, and the youth, giving them free access to family planning options, promote pro-quality of life, sexual education, responsible parenthood, and enhance the country’s population policy as it is really becoming an overburden for the country and the rest of us living wisely and consciously about the economic ramifications of an uncontrollable and rapidly-growing population.

Like always though, it’s the implementation that I’m worried about. But still, I do hope members of Congress don’t kill this bill.

Instead, allow this very contentious bill to pass so that be given a chance “to take the bull by its horn” and do something about our ridiculously over-population of unwanted pregnancies, and uninformed uneducated but uber-sexually-active youths and poor sectors of our society.

Read this to give you some idea about it. Kill Bill later if it has not proven it’s worth.

It is really an uphill battle for proponents of this bill, going against the ultra-conservative (yeah, go forth and multiply) Catholic church exerting every effort to block it. Some opponents even say that this bill is anti-poor, and worst, say it advocates abortion while in reality it’s the opposite, based on my understanding.

I grew up in a big family and I know first-hand what it’s like sharing a piece of bread and a bowl of soup to everyone around the table. And trust me, if I can avoid it, I wouldn’t want to experience that life again as I believe poverty can be considered tragic.

Over-population, resulting into poverty, and of course corruption, are the main reasons why our so-beloved country Philippines can’t catch up with neighboring countries.

Life isn’t a lottery that the more you have tickets, or in this case, children, the more you have chances of winning.

Last Chance

Two weeks from today we will know if all the efforts we’ve put in so far for the proposed high school scholarship project will come into fruition.

You all have between now and the end of this month to submit your pledge donation form....and make a difference.

If you are still interested, willing to participate, and you just simply procrastinate, this is your last chance to put the money where your mouth is!

All bets will be off after September 30, 2009. I promised!

It was an uneventful period between now and the last update about the status of the proposed scholarship project. Tsk tsk...not a good sign...

...not a good sign.

Changes should be within all of us

As I watched the final salute to our former President Cory Aquino weeks ago and the continuing coverage of her life, I begun to wonder where I was during those historical moments in the Philippines when democracy started to crawl up from its grave in 1983, the year Ninoy Aquino, husband and father, was assassinated and a political explosion erupted.

I really never knew Ninoy until someone in the neighborhood drove around annoyingly honking his horns to announce the untimely death of a dangerous opposition to the then current powers. It was a shot heard from every corner of the world that greeted him as he descended out of the plane where he thought he’ll begin his freedom from exile. That shot from an assassin awoke the nation and history was written.

Political uprising thru non-violence and civil disobedience begun, successfully unseated a naked dictatorship power. 1986 marked the year of the snap election and the total unrest of most that resulted into a moral victory, if not politically, of the people power.

I was in Saudi Arabia during those times and so I never consider myself part of those proud moments when our country was put back on the world map in bright yellow for its democratic resiliency.

It was a transition period when Cory Aquino was forced into office as President by loyal supporters of her husband Ninoy. A neophyte in the world of politics, she emerged surprisingly strong against coup attempts from some of the military leaders who didn’t want to accept a civilian like her to lead an angry and hungry nation.

All throughout her years in office, she was said to be the role model in spirituality, motherhood, honesty, and democracy yet there are still oppositions and brutal attempts to dislodge her. I wasn’t around during those tense moments of uprising against Cory’s administration...I was in Japan.

I thought the presidency of FVR in 1992 brought the needed stability but for some reasons didn’t seem to help the nation. From where I was in Los Angeles where I begun my self-exile in 1990, I thought I’ve seen improvements but then again also bright paints of discontent and corruptions.

1998 marked the year a former action star Erap hit the “hweteng” jackpot when he was proclaimed the new President in a landslide victory. Three years later and nothing to show for but bulging pockets of corruptions, he was ousted and jailed.

GMA began her interim presidency and years after allegedly bullied her way to another term. And once again, I’m somewhere else when it all happened.

The political climate have changed course many times since the day I left the island and yet most people I’ve talked to feel we have yet to emerge convincingly victorious with all the shadows of corruptions and economic failures that seemed to be the only tangible measurements of an improving or failing nation.

It’s all been said many times that changes in leadership upstairs will bring new hope to people down below. I think then and I think now….that’s all a misconception!

Changes should be within all of us.

Albeit all that happened the last two decades, I don’t consider myself lucky that I didn’t have to go through all that most of you endured. I would love to be part of it all but something pushed me to leave...at least temporarily.

A joke once told me by an American friend is that it seems Filipinos in general when they are mad they shop, eat, drink, sing, or out on the streets with their rallying cry for another change in leadership because they are not getting what they want.

Like I said, changes should be within all of us.

Don’t Stop Believing

A week ago, daughter and I had a VIP pass to watch a free concert hosted by my employer. One local band played exclusively songs popularized by the famous group Journey.

You know...we may have gone "Separate Ways" after high school...

...and then started wondering during that time "Who’s Crying Now".

Our grand reunion 25 years later found ourselves meeting once again with "Open Arms"...

...and we "Faithfully" promised to keep in touch after.

We tried and struggled to be become one solid, cohesive unit...

...while we have that grand vision to become relevance to others in need.

Well friends and classmates, please "Don’t Stop Believing".

Anyway, the place was rockin’...

And in case you are not an avid follower, our very own Arnel Pineda is now the lead singer of Journey.

myHeart Is Burning

It's all good now with the fire being contained efficiently. We're so equipped with the latest mapping technology that we will win in the end...GIS ROCKS! ;-)

From where I stand next to my office window I can see in the horizon an orange glow and a burning desire to conquer the steep slope and dry bushes fueled with the long drought of summer compounded by low humid temperature reaching boiling point. The mountain fire is inching towards the vicinity of suburban Los Angeles and it so far destroyed about 50 or so houses.

I am safe for now but others aren’t.
You’re so angry….chill out boy…chill out! You’re giving me too much work with all this fire perimeter mapping stuff I have to spit out of Harry, the plotter.
You shouldn’t be that mad! Life is too short to let yourself consumed with all this non-sense and unhealthy feelings towards us. We have to learn to co-exist or else we don’t get to accomplish things we want to….help us so we can help you..dumbass!

Facebook atbp.

The way we communicate and get information has changed forever since Facebook, Twitter, My Space, You Tube, among others, begun to emerge and considered part of social networking skills. Many of my "friends" use one or more of these technology and I do understand the appeal and excitement of these methods of communication.

But please! Don't nag me to death to join any of these services especially Facebook so you can write things on my "wall".

Honey my dear, I already have walls, in fact I have many with some hanging pictures and expensive paitings already. Honestly, if you dare write on my walls, I swear to beat your head up with my keyboard.

I understand that if I join Twitter, many of my so-called friends will know what I'm doing and that's really not a good thing.

If I really wanted anyone to know what I was thinking and doing, I'd be talking, not sending those "tweets" to the whole world...

...for crying out loud!

I understand of I joined My Space (has anyone over 13 been using it at all), I can have my own virtual space and reconnect with old friends.

Look dude! If I have known you for a long time and still friends with you, then you are an old friend I love to hang out with. Now, if I used to be friends with you and have not talked with you in many years, there's probably a good reason why we don't speak anymore. Sorry about your sister...hehehe

Anyway, call me particular co'z you won't find me in any of these mass communication devices because I prefer my "friends" to be those I have actually met before and keep in regular contact and have a beer with or two...or even slept with. ;-)

I understand the many appeals of this social networking technologies, catching up with old friends, keeping in-touch, share pictures with families, letting them know what you had for dinner whatever, lying about their age...ooops! well, you know who you are hehehe...

Really! I get the appeals but it just that they are not for me. You may have captured many of my friends but you will never claim me. I do like YouTube however....very cool!

Seriously, I wish you all the best. Say tweet to my "friends" but please don't sit on my space and once again I warned you, stay away from my walls!

Capisce?

Life is a Beach

One thing I've done many times in the past when things aren't going the way I planned and suddenly I'm looking for some sort of inspiration to re-energize myself, I go to the beach.

Life can be a bitch sometime...
